    Swetland Homestead

    The Swetland Homestead contains the original cabin built on the site in 1803 as well as the additions made as the Swetland family grew. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and open to the public year round. Special events take place throughout the year.

    Wyoming Valley Historical & Geological Society
    Founded in 1858, this society maintains the collective memory of the Luzerne County. Exhibits are provided by the society that interprets the history, traditions, culture people and events that molded the current county. Features include costumes, Native American artifacts, textiles, posters and military uniforms.

    Bishop Memorial Library

    Constructed in 1875 and purchased by the Luzerne County Historical Society in 1971, the Bishop Library houses the society's paper collection as well as its executive offices. It is open to the public for a daily usage fee.

    Catlin House

    Built in 1912, this 16-room residence in the city of Scranton belonged to George H. Catlin, an early financier. Since 1942, the turn-of-the-century building has been home to the Lackawanna Historical Society. Visitors may tour the furnished first floor rooms and the historical displays and artifacts on the second floor.

    Huber Breaker

    When constructed in 1939 the breaker was regarded as a modern wonder. Since closing in 1976, The Huber Breaker has stood as a reminder of the area's rich heritage. It was the largest of its kind, built to process several local mines' coal output.

    Steamtown National Historic Site

    One of the largest collections of period locomotives and rolling stock in the United States is on display at Steamtown National Historic Site. Visitors have the chance to see a working roundhouse, a locomotive shop and a restoration shop. A history museum, a technology museum and a visitor center are also located on-site.

    Scranton Iron Furnaces

    Located near the Steamtown National Historic Site, these furnaces represent the early iron industry in the US. All that is left of a once extensive iron plant, these four massive stone blast furnaces began operation in 1840 and worked until 1902. The park they are set in is open to visitors year round and is available for picnics in the summer months.

    Wyoming Battle Monument
    Completed in 1843, the Wyoming Battle Monument is a Revolutionary War Monument and gravesite for the victims of the Wyoming Massacre. Here, on July 3, 1778, local residents fought and died trying to defend the area from the British Tories.
